India’s Operating System to be Developed by DRDO

It is reported that, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India is developing own Operating System due to security threat. For this purpose DRDO starting two new software engineering centres; One in Bangalore and the other one in New Delhi. 50 scientists from these two centres will work on the operating system development. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Centre for Development of Telematics will work with DRDO to develop the new secure Operating System.
“In today’s world where you have tremendous requirements of security on whatever you do – economy, banking and defense – it is essential that you need to have an operating system. With a home-grown system, the source code will be with us and it helps in securing our systems.” Dr V K Saraswat, DRDO Director, said while speaking to presspersons after opening a training facility at the DRDO’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. The new operating system would also have commercial use. He did not mention about the money involved for the project and the timeframe.
Dr. Saraswat said: “We do not have our own operating system. Today, various bodies, including banks and defense establishments, need security. Having our own operating system will help us prevent hacking of our systems.To start with, we will have 25 scientists at each of these centres. We are in touch with institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Centre for Development of Telematics, besides universities and industries. We will use available talent.With a home-grown system, the source code will be with us and it helps in securing our systems.
C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) had derived an Indian Operating System named BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions). BOSS is a GNU/Linux distribution developed from Debian for enhancing the use of Free/ Open Source Software throughout India. It supports Intel and AMD x86/x86-64 architecture. BOSS GNU/Linux advanced server has unique features such as Web server, proxy server, Database server, Mail server, Network server, File and Print server, SMS server and LDAP server. BOSS GNU/Linux advanced server is comprised with administration tool such as webmin which is a web based interface, Gadmin, PHP myadmin, PHP LDAP admin, PG admin.
Many free software geeks do not support for the new closed Operating System initiative by DRDO. If closed source means more secure, Windows operating system should have been the most secure operating system! It is worth thinking about do we really need an OS for specifically for India, if yes, what would be the real objective of such an operating system and how is it going to assist us in the long run? Let us wait and see hoe it turns out into.

What Happens When Sixth Sense meets an iPad?

At a TED conference in 2009, MIT researcher Pranav Mistry demonstrated Sixth Sense, a wearable projector that lets us use simple hand gestures to interact with information. For instance, you can hold a book in your hands, the device will pick reviews of that book from the Internet and will project them on to the book cover itself.
Sixth Sense is fascinating technology, the total cost of the hardware is under $350 and all the software will be open source. During a Q&A with TED curator Chris Anderson, Pranav hinted that the software could be released in December 2009 but the wait continues.
Now imagine for a moment if we could integrate some parts of the Sixth Sense technology - like the hologram floating in mid-air or those multi-touch gesturees - into the next iPad or mobile phone?
Zach King, a film student from LA, has created this neat video where the iPad screen is projected in the form of a hologram and users can interact with the various apps using natural hand gestures. Futuristic but not impossible.

The PCs of 2020....???No...Its a PC Pen.!!!!Have a look..!

In 2020 PCs will be of Pen shape and Size...Yes..it will be a reality...soon!
The Japs are at it again they are developing a Pen size computer. A size which you can easily slip in a pocket when your work is finished.
The pen will project a virtual keyboard and a monitor on the surface on which it is kept and then when you press keys it will recognize them via Bluetooth and do the corresponding job for you.
Leave alone the concept but photo is as mesmerizing as the concept. We do not have (neither do other blogs) much info on this pen sized computer.

How to Find WiFi Hotspots in your Area

f you are travelling to a new city and are trying to locate Wi-Fi hotspots around to access the Internet, both Bing and Google may help you find the information you are looking for. Go to Bing.com and search for “wireless hotspots near Delhi, India.” Replace Delhi, India with the name of your city or, if you are in the U.S., you may even use zip codes with the search query

You should switch to the U.S. edition of Bing to use the hotspot finder feature though they do have hotspot location data for Indian cities as well.
Google Places may also be used for finding Wi-Fi hotspots anywhere in the world (screenshot) and the syntax is pretty similar to that of Bing. For example:
1. Wireless Hotspots in Las Vegas
2. Wi-Fi Hotspots near Dubai
3. WiFi Hotspots near Bangalore, India
Google Places gets data from business owners as well as listings on travel sites as these listings may have information on whether that place offers Wireless Internet or not.
Also, the hotspot listings appearing in Google and Bing are businesses and less likely to be ‘public’ hotspots so you’ll be disappointed if you were looking for free Wi-Fi.

What’s the IP Address of my Device?

Whether you are looking to upgrade the firmware of your existing router or need to further secure your Wireless network with an even stronger password, you first need to know the exact IP address of the router in order to access the various settings.
Now the default IP address of most routers is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 but in some cases - see example - you might have changed the default IP address at the time of installation and unfortunately, you do not remember that value any more.
Not a problem. There are at least two easy ways by which you can quickly determine the IP address of your router.
Option #1 – Go to Start –> Run and enter the following command in the Run box.

cmd /k ipconfig

The IP address listed under “Default Gateway” is your router’s IP address (screenshot).
Option #2 – Open the Run box again and type the traceroute command as shown below:

cmd /k tracert cyberrearth.blogspot.com

The IP Address listed at the first hop in the traceroute log is your router’s IP address.
If nothing works, you might have to reset the router to factory defaults and this will change its IP address back to 192.168.1.1 (Google the name of your router model for the exact value).

Scientists have discovered the world's smallest superconductor, a sheet of four pairs of molecules less than one nanometer wide. The Ohio University-led study, published March 29 as an advance online publication in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, provides the first evidence that nanoscale molecular superconducting wires can be fabricated, which could be used for nanoscale electronic devices and energy applications.

Designed for use in an implantable eye-pressure monitor, University of Michigan researchers developed what is believed to be the first complete millimeter-scale computing system.

Researchers recently unveiled the first complete millimeter-scale computing system -- about the size of the letter "N" on the back of a penny (or the letters in this sentence).

This tiniest computer to date is a prototype of an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients. Key to this unit linking up with other computers to form wireless sensor networks is a compact radio that needs no tuning to find the right frequency.

One day, these Lilliputian computers could track pollution, monitor structural integrity, perform surveillance, or make virtually any object smart and traceable.

Better, faster, smaller

Nearly invisible millimeter-scale systems could enable ubiquitous computing by following the trajectory of Bell's Law, a corollary to Moore's Law. (Moore's Law says that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit doubles every two years, roughly doubling processing power.)

Bell's Law says a new class of smaller, cheaper computers comes along about every decade. With each new class, the volume shrinks by two orders of magnitude and the number of systems per person increases. The law has held from 1960s' mainframes through the '80s' personal computers, the '90s' notebooks and the new millennium's smartphones.

"When you get smaller than hand-held devices, you turn to these monitoring devices," said David Blaauw, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan who is working on the new tiny computer.

"The next big challenge is to achieve millimeter-scale systems, which have a host of new applications for monitoring our bodies, our environment and our buildings."

Power at small scales

The new system is targeted toward medical applications, focusing on a pressure monitor designed to be implanted in the eye to conveniently and continuously track the progress of glaucoma, a potentially blinding disease. (The device is expected to be commercially available several years from now.)
